Prof. Yuri K. Nazarkine

Graduated from the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Relations in 1956 and joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Moscow.

In 1956-66 he worked in an analytical department of the Ministry, in 1967-92 was involved in negotiations on arms control and disarmament, the Conference on disarmament, the UN General Assembly, the Vienna Atomic Agency etc. In particular, in 1987-89 he represented his country as Ambassador at the Conference on Disarmament and in 1989-91 was Chief Negotiator at the Soviet-American talks on nuclear and space weapons (START and ABM).

Dec.1992-Apr.1995: worked with the Security Council of the Russian Federation as Deputy Secretary and Head of Directorate.

Afterwards consulted some Russian banks and the Russian State Duma on foreign affairs, worked as Senior Researcher at the Moscow State Institute on Foreign Relations, member of the Faculty (Professor and Senior Researcher) in the Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP), Senior Researcher in the Geneva Center for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) and Research Director in the Association “Comprehensive Dialogue among Civilizations (CDAC).

Academic background:
• MA in International Relations in 1956 at the Moscow Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
• PhD in International Relations in 1978 at the Institute of the World Economics and International Relations (WEIR).
• Research work in WEIR: 1976-86.
• Research work in MGIMO: 1995-96.
• Research work in Carnegie Endowment – Moscow Office: 1995-96.
• Member of the Faculty, Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP): 1996-2001.
• Senior Researcher, Geneva Center for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF): 2002-2005.
• Research Director, Association “Comprehensive Dialogue among Civilizations (CDAC): since 2005.
• Courses given at MGIMO and Diplomatic Academy (Moscow) on international negotiations (strategy, tactics and technique), international security and arms control and disarmament.
• Lectures given at Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva, on international security, arms control and disarmament, CIS.
