Prof. Michael Friend

Michael Friend is currently a researcher, teacher and writer on American foreign policy and international security issues living in the Geneva area of Switzerland.

In addition to teaching at the Geneva School of Diplomacy, he is an associate faculty member at the Geneva Center for Security Policy and has also taught at Webster University, Geneva Campus.

From 1989 to 2001 Mr. Friend worked for the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). He served briefly as Desk Officer for the UK, Canada and the Netherlands during the Afghan War prior to resigning from government service. From 1999 to 2001 he was seconded to the Geneva Center for Security Policy as U.S. faculty member, with primary responsibilities for teaching nonproliferation and arms control and US foreign and security policy.

Before taking up his position at the GCSP he was Assistant for Non-Proliferation Policy in the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, specializing in multilateral nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament issues. In OSD he served previously as Senate Liaison for foreign military aid and arms sales, and as staff assistant for security assistance and arms transfer policy.
