January Guest Lunch-Monsignor Archbishop Silvano M. Tomasi

19th January 2008

On January 18th, the students and faculty of GSD were honored to welcome Monsignor Archbishop Silvano M. Tomasi C.S., Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva to our guest lunch.

Mgr. Tomasi’s speech reflected among other things on the role of religion in world affairs, discussing today’s “new pluralism”.
Examples of the age of “new pluralism” that were mentioned:

-The success of Buddhism in the U.S.
-Establishment of a new Islamic University in Rotterdam
-Strength of the Roman Catholic Church in the Southern Hemisphere.
The influence of religion always needs to be considered when studying society or conflicts.
Mgr. Tomasi brought up the positive example of John Paul II as the messenger of peace vs. the truly awful idea of using child soldiers in Northern Uganda to fight”in the name of God”.

Mgr. Tomasi’s conclusion was the following:
All religions share core values of dialogue, human dignity and peace. These values need to applied in every discord.
