Globalization and Human Rights Conference

14th November 2008

On behalf of the university, Dr Colum Murphy, President of GSD, spoke at the conference on Globalization and Human Rights at the invitation of Mikhael Gorbachev, President of the Gorbachev Foundation and President of the World Political Forum. The World Political Forum conference took place in November 2008 in Bosco Morengo, Italy for a globalising world.

Dr. Murphy said in his address “both good and bad ideas and events spread more quickly. Financial meltdowns are internationally contagious. Understanding and propagating universaluniversal ethics and values is, therefore, even more urgent. The demands of morality and common sense merge… That is the relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Dr. Murphy also announced, during the conference that the Geneva School of Diplomacy was awarding to Mikhael Gorbachev and to the World Political Forum, the degree of Doctor of International Relations(DIR) honoris causa for their exceptional work in the political and humanitarian sphere.
