Copenhagen, Climate Change and the GSD Globecraft ® Course

4th December 2009

With the UN Copenhagen Conference about to open and warnings of “Dangerous Climate Change Ahead” proliferating, hopes for a legally binding agreement at this long-awaited meeting are fading.

And this despite President Obama’s last-minute decision to attend the UN session in Denmark! Indeed, among the Greens and others attempting to get across the urgency of the world’s climate problems, the sense of disappointment is now already palpable: the road ahead toward environmental solutions appears longer and more dangerous than many thought.

We are not short of warnings. Already in September GSD held its special Globecraft ® Course for world leaders with the course theme “Conflict & Climate Change”. The GSD course sought to place before world leaders in Copenhagen the increasing danger of wars and conflicts emanating from climate crises. A world now so tardy in protecting its own environment is a world flirting yet again with the growing dangers of new kinds of wars. Climate change is fast becoming yet another spark of potential conflict around the globe.

For the GSD Globecraft ® Course speakers came from all over the world. Prominent experts such as Gwynne Dyer (author of the book Climate Wars), members of parliaments and senior diplomats stressed the urgency of the Copenhagen debate taking an even more somber view now of environmental dislocations. Time was running out, the speakers agreed, for adequate agreed solutions to be hammered out if the human species is to avoid catastrophes on a global scale. At the course, His Excellency Li Baodong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China made an important statement.

The GSD Globecraft ® Course was a ground-breaking event.

GSD plans to, each year, convene other Globecraft ® Courses on key world issues of pressing political, economic and social urgency. The courses will bring together, on the GSD campus, world leaders as well as leading world experts in the relevant fields. The avant garde GSD leadership course is an increasingly sought-after forum for busy world leaders who must take the hard decisions on the most pressing of issues.
