The Geneva School of Diplomacy awarded the following degrees of Doctor of International Relations, honoris causa:

H.S.H. ALBERT II
SOVEREIGN PRINCE OF MONACO

Prince Albert of Monaco needs no introduction. Less known, however, are the Prince’s growing efforts, devotion and hard work in defense of our common environment. After an expedition to the North Pole in 2006 Prince Albert came to the decision to devote time and energy to issues of climate change and global warming. In recent years Prince Albert has shown exemplary statesmanship in increasingly shouldering the burden of several campaigns to fight pollution of the atmosphere and oceans, to protect biodiversity and to preserve marine flora and fauna. These various activities are the goals of the Prince Albert of Monaco Foundation. The Foundation is active in three main areas: climate change; biodiversity; and water. The first of these has its focus on the development of alternative fuels, including development of bio-gas in Punta Arenas (Chile) and research on a second generation of bio-fuels in France. In the area of bio-diversity three projects are currently running with the Foundation’s support: eco-efficient reorganization for small states; re-introduction of the gypaetus barbatus in the Alpine arc; and conservation of the primary forest in Indonesia. Finally, the project “Protection of the south Moroccan oases” addresses issues of climate change, desertification, water management and bio-diversity, whilst favoring the social and economic development of the local populations.

Prince Albert is also a patron of the United Nations Environment Programme and is particularly involved in the Billion Tree Campaign. In 2008 the Prince received the Champions of the Earth award. For his statesmanship and fine leadership example to the world in these vital areas, the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations awards Prince Albert II the degree of Doctor of International Relations (DIR), honoris causa.

CURTIS ROOSEVELT

Curtis Roosevelt is, at once, political thinker, writer, historian, commentator and university professor. He is the grandson of American President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. From absorbing politics in his grandfather’s White House, at the age of eighteen he functioned as what nowadays we call an “intern” – helping and hosting for Eleanor Roosevelt as she lobbied successfully to produce the epoch-making Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Born in New York City, Curtis Roosevelt grew up at the FDR home at Hyde Park and in the White House. Graduating from Columbia University’s School of Public Law and Government, he went on to a career in university administration before joining the United Nations Secretariat. There, his work focused on the analyses of institutions and their political dynamics. He returned to academic administration before retiring to write. His commentaries on the US political scene have been widely published internationally and he has appeared in more than a dozen documentary films. Curtis Roosevelt is a Visiting Professor at the Geneva School of Diplomacy & International Relations. His book Too Close to the Sun (Public Affairs) will appear in November
